Dave Steinour, CIO
Welcome
Benny Walker, VP for Enrollment
Introduction to Younts Center
Wade Worthen, Professor of Biology, Furman Lake Renewal Project
The university will restore its campus lake to a more natural, healthy environment. Major changes will include providing new
vegetation for the lakeshore and shallows (to naturally filter the water and reduce algae growth), and reducing the populations of
waterfowl.
Jeff Redderson, Director of Facilities,Technology Applications for Energy Conservation
Construction at Furman continues to be cost effective, sustainable, and energy efficient. The new $60 million Charles H. Townes
Center for Science, scheduled for completion in 2008, will be a “living building and laboratory” and feature a solar aquatic treatment
facility, solar thermal panels, rainwater collection and day lighting systems. Jeff will talk about this as well as other significant
technology-driven projects for energy conservation throughout the physical plant.
James Wilkins – Environmental Sustainability Intern
Students produce alternative fuels for campus use. Members of the Environmental Action Group (EAG) operate a small facility in
which they convert waste vegetable oil from the dining hall into biodiesel fuel. The vehicles in use for Facilities Services run on this
fuel produced onsite at a low cost.
Participants choose ONE of the following venues – transportation provided via golf cart and/or Paladin Express
- Furman Lake – Hosted by Wade Worthen
- Science Building Construction site – Hosted by Chris Norris, General Contractor with Jeff Redderson
- Biodiesel Facility – Hosted by student manager for fuel facility with James Wilkins
